GLITTER BALLOONS

It's so easy to forget how much the simplest ideas can entertain children for hours - if not days. When the three-year-old's room was finished after a recent refurb, I hung three glitter balloons in her bedroom. One was for each child, but I let her play with them until her brother got home from school and her sister had a nap.

She thought they were the best thing ever. The glitter - or confetti, to be more exact - inside the helium-filled balloons made a noise like a shaker, and it sparkled in the light.

Later everyone had fun playing with them - all over the house. And for days later they were still shaking them, even after the balloons had deflated.
